The COPD Foundation lung simulator will offer attendees a chance to learn more about the disease, including taking a breathing test.

ATS International Conference attendees will be able to witness the devastating effects of smoking and other pollutants on lung tissue in the COPD Foundation’s COPD Shuttle: Journey to the Center of the Lung simulator.

Using a state-of-the-art mobile motion-simulator capsule mounted on a custom-built tractor/trailer, attendees will embark on a microscopic journey into the human body to learn about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The 20-seat motion simulator capsule combines high-definition imagery and surround-sound audio with precise, computer-driven motion control.

Each presentation lasts about five minutes, and after the ride attendees will be asked to take an exit survey. They also will have access to all of the COPD Foundation’s resources, which include educational literature and information on the organization’s programs.

“This is the first educational ‘ride’ into lung disease ever presented to the public, and we are confident that it will be a great resource for the lung health advocacy and awareness community,” said COPD Foundation President John Walsh. “We’re pleased to launch this at the International Conference in recognition of 2010 Year of the Lung.”

Over the next year, the COPD Foundation will use the simulator to increase awareness of lung diseases at health fairs, schools, sporting events and other public gatherings.

“The reason we felt so strongly in creating this program is because we want both diagnosed and undiagnosed individuals, family members and healthcare professionals to have a better understanding of the disease. It’s important for all — not just those affected by,COPD, — to understand how the disease impacts a person’s life,” Walsh said. “We’re confident that by educating the public with our ‘Journey to the Center of the Lung’ simulator, more individuals will recognize their symptoms early and benefit by taking action sooner.”

Attendees will be able to visit the lung simulator at booth #101 during Exhibits hours.
