Gibbons Addresses State of NHLBI

gibbons_01National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Director Gary H. Gibbons, MD, provided an important outlook on the state of affairs at the $3 billion institution—the third largest at the National Institutes of Health—as well as his vision of collaboration with the Society during the President’s Symposium yesterday. “We’re in a shifting environment fiscally and politically, and some of that is actually energizing,” Dr. Gibbons said, adding that 5 percent across-the-board budget cuts in NHLBI programs meant that it has to become adaptive, nimble, and change.
